The life story of Elsa Dubbelman provides one of the strongest indications of a direct connection between the Dutch Dubbelman family and the Dubbelman families that later appeared in Russia. According to her son, Reijo Rautajoki, their family descends from a Dutch shipbuilder who moved to Russia during the era of Peter the Great. This ancestor settled in Ingermanland, where his descendants became serfs and remained for generations.
Reijo identifies himself as the fifth generation after this first Dubbelman in Russia, which places the original Dutch ancestor in the early 18th century—exactly the period when Peter the Great recruited foreign craftsmen, including Dutch shipbuilders, for his naval reforms.
This timeline aligns with known historical migration patterns: Dutch specialists were invited to Russia, often settled near St. Petersburg, and their families integrated into local communities. The presence of the Dubbelman name in Ingermanland from the 1700s onward supports this continuity.
