Jan Dubbelman

Born in Lage Zwaluwe, in the western part of the Dutch province of North Brabant. A truly Dutch family that faced many hardships but eventually grew into a large lineage. Predominantly Catholic.

Michiel Dubbelman

Also from Lage Zwaluwe. Michiel is a rare first name within the family, but this branch ultimately led to my own family. It is primarily Protestant and represents the largest collection of individuals.

Abraham Dubbelman

Believed to be the father of Aapo Dubbelman, who was born in Russia, in Ingermanland near St. Petersburg. It’s likely that a Dubbelman traveled there as a shipbuilder for Tsar Peter’s navy. As payment and gratitude, they were granted a farm in the area. They where Lutherans and lived in muncipality Spanko.

Thomas Dobbelmann

Originally from Cologne, Germany. His name was not Dubbelman — that only came later when descendants settled in the Netherlands and changed their surname. In Cologne, the Dobbelmanns belonged to a brewing family. In the Netherlands, one descendant became known for the Dobbelman laundry detergent brand, named after the family who dropped the second “n” from the German spelling.
