Two Years Earlier

cornelis-217-1.jpgThis week, we present portraits of two fellow countrymen born more than a century ago: Mrs. C. F. Klein, widow, and Cornelis Dubbelman. The former passed away this week in Maarssen at the age of 102 years and two months. Cornelis Dubbelman, however, will celebrate his 102nd birthday tomorrow, April 2, and still lives cheerfully and in good health in his birthplace, Hooge Zwaluwe.

At age 26, Mr. Dubbelman married, but eight years later, he lost his wife. He remained a widower for fifteen years before marrying again—his current wife, now 82 years old, gave him eight more children in addition to the six from his first marriage.

The elderly man, a fisherman by trade, still enjoys excellent health—he reads without glasses. He has almost never smoked, but chews tobacco frequently. He doesn’t know what beer tastes like, though he’s not opposed to it. Since suffering from severe fevers at age 19, he has never been ill.
